California State Athletic Commission executive director Andy Foster confirmed that the top middleweight contender is one of six fighters that recently competed at UFC 241 in Anaheim, California, on Aug. 17, who is being advised to move up a weight class by the commission.
The list of fighters recommended to change weights, which also includes bantamweights Manny Bermudez, Brandon Davis, and Kyung Ho Kang, flyweight Sabina Mazo, and featherweight Sodiq Yusuff.
Foster noted that these are suggested changes specifically for when these fighters are next scheduled to compete in California, and that they are not being forced to make the move. They will just need clearance from the commission to fight at their current weight class again in the future.
Costa’s manager Wallid Ismail told that he expects “Borrachinha” to continue competing at 185 pounds.
“It’s a recommendation, not an obligation,” Ismail said. “That’s normal and has happened to other athletes as well. He made weight super nicely, with supervision from a doctor, and was already on weight a day before the weigh-ins.”
“To give you an idea, he had breakfast before the weigh-ins because he was under the limit. It’s all good.”
The CSAC is the only commission that makes fight night weights public and the numbers for UFC 241 revealed that the above listed fighters all had a weight difference of 15 percent or more (officially, Costa was 14.9 percent heavier) from Friday’s weigh-ins to Saturday’s fights.
For perspective, Costa weighed in at 186 pounds on Friday and re-hydrated to 213.8 pounds on Saturday. The two biggest gainers were Bermudez (140 to 164.8 = 17.7%), who actually competed in a 140-pound catchweight bout, and Yusuff (145 to 169.2 = 16.7%).
