Dustin Poirier wants Conor McGregor rematch following title fight loss at UFC 242

10. 9. 2019

Dustin Poirier isn’t interested in sitting on a loss for very long and now he’s looking to erase a defeat from his past.

Last weekend at UFC 242, Poirier came up short in his bid to become undisputed lightweight champion when he fell to Khabib Nurmagomedov by third round rear naked choke. Afterwards, Poirier was understandably emotional and wasn’t ready to address his future just yet.

He put any questions about what comes next to rest on Tuesday after taking to Twitter to call for a rematch against Conor McGregor in his return to the Octagon.

“I think me and Conor running it back makes a lot of sense at this point.”

Poirier first faced McGregor back in 2014 when he was still competing as a featherweight in the UFC. A ton of tension between the fighters leading up to the contest ended in dramatic fashion after McGregor finished Poirier by TKO at just 1:46 into the opening round.

That was the last time Poirier competed at 145 pounds before moving to lightweight where he’s amassed an impressive 9-2 record with one no contest.

Now it looks like Poirier is ready to book his next fight to wash the taste of defeat out of his mouth while also hoping to avenge a prior loss by calling for the rematch against McGregor.

For his part, McGregor has teased a return to action before the end of 2019 as he recovers from surgery on a broken hand suffered in training. McGregor hasn’t fought since last October when he lost to Nurmagomedov by fourth-round submission at UFC 229.

McGregor mentioned several potential opponents for his next fight and Poirier was among the names that interested in the Irish superstar as he plotted his comeback.

Obviously, Poirier is on board as he hopes to coax McGregor into a rematch for his next fight in the UFC.
